Actually Fine or Winchester “Fine”? 5 Supernatural-Inspired Self-Care Tips

Yes, I’m exaggerating. . . slightly.

I apologize for the radio silence, but I’ve been under the weather since Saturday. It started as just a sore throat, malaise, and lost appetite, but now it’s evolved into a full-blown cold. I don’t get sick very often—in school, I won perfect attendance awards every other year. For some reason, I only got sick during even-numbered grades: 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th.

I’ve been pondering over a new Main post for about two weeks now, but while I wait for those ideas to crystallize, here’s a quick list of 5 self-care tips inspired by Supernatural.

1. Salt is bad for ghosts, but great for you

Seasoned hunters always keep salt on hand for good reason. If you have an upper or lower respiratory infection, salt water (also known as saline) can feel like a lifesaver. Gargling warm salt water can soothe irritated throats, and a saline nasal spray can help alleviate congestion naturally (i.e., without drugs). A homemade electrolyte solution made with salt and sugar can help you stay hydrated as well. This recipe is a whole lot cheaper than store-bought Gatorade but works just as well.

2. Don’t bottle it all up inside

Sneezing, coughing, and blowing your nose is gross and annoying, I know, but all that mucus—and the germs it contains—needs to be expelled if you’re going to get better. Cover your nose and mouth, keep used tissues corralled in a trash receptacle, and wash and/or sanitize your hands often if you don’t live alone.

3. Know when to fold ‘em

Know and respect your limits. If you’re too sick for work or school, call off and rest and don’t go back until you feel better. And don’t visit homes with elderly residents or infants, either. Don’t be the reason we can’t have nice things.

4. Laughter really is the best medicine

Laughter really does boost healing by releasing endorphins and other health-promoting chemicals inside the body. However, if you have a severe cough, you might want to keep the actual laughing to a minimum, but definitely watch or listen to something that makes you feel good regardless. I was introduced to this video yesterday and can therefore vouch for it being pee-your-pants, fall-out-of-your-chair, scare-the-crap-out-of-the-cat funny.

5. Netflix and still

Take advantage of your sick day(s) by finding something binge-worthy on Netflix/Hulu/Prime and couch potato this shit up! However, I would suggest picking something that’s not too complicated or eventful (i.e., no Game of Thrones) so that if you do end up taking an impromptu nap (or five), you won’t completely lose the plot. Sitcoms and soaps are tailor-made for this.

And if all else fails, there’s always faith healers and witches, right?
